University of Adelaide built a robot spider to scan Australia’s Naracoorte Caves
In the southeast of South Australia lie the Naracoorte Caves. The national forest is an UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its stalactites, stalagmites as well as ancient fossils. Just recently, a group of students from the University of Adelaide built a robot to finish a 3D check of the website. The project, called CaveX, saw the group produce 15 versions of the design you see above before they picked a last style. They opted for a robot that walks on a collection of 6 legs out of a worry that with treads or wheels would certainly damage the surface of the caves. The design also allowed it to go across uneven surface with a variety of different strides.
